Summary
In the aftermath of World War I, numerous alternative educational approaches emerged across Europe, focusing on autonomy, diversity, sensory learning, and contact with nature. How can we educate for emancipation?
Through a montage of rare archival footage narrated by educators, the film Révolution école, 1918-1939 examines the complex relationship between the new school and 20th-century ideologies.

Synopsis
In a Europe traumatized by World War I, educators pointed the finger at the culprit: schools, which had produced “brave soldiers.” It was now time to build peace and develop a new education system for a generation of children who, it was hoped, would never go to war again. How could they be educated without supervision and punishment? How could they be helped to become independent? Making children happy would make them better adults, believed those who embarked on this adventure. They were called Rudolf Steiner, Maria Montessori, Célestin Freinet, Alexander S. Neill, Ovide Decroly, Paul Geheeb, and Janusz Korczak, each of whom invented their own educational methods. A Swiss educator, Adolphe Ferrière, brought them together in the International League for New Education.
Rise and fall
In Europe, new schools focus on autonomy, coeducation, sensory learning, contact with nature, and sports, which are often practiced naked, particularly in Germany, where naturism is in vogue. But opinions differ. Should education be for the elite or for the masses? Should children be given complete freedom or should discipline be introduced? Can students escape any kind of curriculum, even an emancipatory one? The dream of the new school collapsed with the rise of totalitarian ideologies in the 1930s. Using rare archival footage, the film tells the story of a struggle for human progress, which was built up and then shattered by the ideologies of the 20th century, but whose legacy lives on.
